`#Dylan sometimes bears the epithet Ail Ton, “son of wave” or Ail Mor, “son of the sea,” and so he has been interpreted as being #Arianrhod’s child with a sea god or merman. (Arianrhod‘s second child, born on the same occasion, was LLeu Llaw Gyffes.) Certainly the sea was Dylan’s element, for he swam like a fish and took great pleasure in feeling the waves under his body. But he was killed by his uncle, the rapist Gilfaethwy.`

`Before the beautiful #Arianrhod could become King Math`s footholder, he asked her to step over his wand to prove her purity. But when she did so, a baby dropped from her womb (despite the fact that she was unaware she was pregnant) and fled immediately to the sea. He is sometimes called Dylan Ail Ton, “son of wave” or Ail Mor, “son of the sea,” and so he has been interpreted as being Arianrhod’s child with a sea god or merman. Many have seen in #Arianrhod the remnants or reflection of an ancient moon goddess. Yet again, she has been called a dawn goddess because she is mother of both light (Lleu) and darkness (Dylan). #Arianrhod was said to live surrounded by her maidens in her castle on the coastal island of Caer Arianrhod, which is also an idiomatic #Welsh name for the constellation called Corona Borealis. In that seagirt (or starry) realm, she lived wantonly, which suggests a parallel to the #Breton figure of Dahut.

#Celtic #LegendaryWednesday: The footholder of the #Welsh king/underworld god #Math was raped by Gilvaethwy. He and his brother Gwyddion were enchanted into animals as punishment for three years. First, as stag and hind, they had to give birth to a hind calf and deliver it to Math, then as boar and sow a piglet, and finally as wolf and she-wolf a pup. Afterwards, again in human form, Gwyddion, god of science and son of the mother goddess Dana, and Gilvaethwy proposed to their uncle #Math their sister #Arianrhod as the new footholder.

Just off the the Llyn peninsular in Wales is a reef thought to be the stronghold of Arianrhod--lady of the silver wheel, goddess of the stars and fate.
Caer Arianrhod, or the Castle of Arianrhod, is also the Welsh name for the constellation Corona Borealis #FolkloreThursday

King Math`s life depended upon his feet resting in the lap of a virgin. Gwydion nominated his sister #Arianrhod, daughter of the mother goddess Dôn, to serve as footholder. Asked if she were a virgin, the beautiful Arianrhod said that, as far as she knew, she was. Math asked her to step over his wand to prove her purity, but when she did so, she gave birth to two children she had conceived unawares: Dylan and Lleu LLaw Gyffes.
