'Even as the consequences become clear, can politicians with no skin in the game, who have never and will never have to rely on council-run and council-subsidised facilities, really understand – at a fundamental level – what their decisions mean for communities like the one in which I grew up?'

'Once in power, Starmer will be just as enslaved to the demands of the corporate elite as he is now, while “tip-toeing to the finishing line”. As prime minister, he will be as much of a disappointment as he is leading the opposition - probably more so.'

'A Conservative government might not have any moral qualms about pushing children into poverty—though, as we have seen, it should at least be concerned about the impact on population growth. But if a Labour opposition cannot even bring itself to oppose such an obviously abhorrent policy, it does not deserve to win power.'

Ben Wallace is quitting as an MP and my first and only thought on the matter is good riddance. I’m especially thankful to the US for putting a stop to his NATO leadership bid. Any man who still supports Boris Johnson shouldn’t be in any position where people’s lives depend on their judgement.

The UK media coverage of this BBC presenter story has been so unprofessional. It’s been a constant frenzy of speculation & opinions without much substance at all. Now the police have determined no crime has been committed & the man is now in hospital, can we get back to real news? How much has already been buried because of this?

Good article. Watering down the New Deal for Working People is presumably considered an essential piece of 'housekeeping' by the right-wing faction running Labour as it's the only major Starmer election pledge still standing. Not too late for the unions to fight back...

Brexit is not done. You can’t just void 40 years of EU law. That would create an absence of law in vitally important areas making it impossible for the courts to function. Laws have to be unpicked and replaced which will require years of legal resources & Parliamentary focus.

Hope is not a form of guarantee; it’s a form of energy, and very frequently that energy is strongest in circumstances that are very dark.

'While the Privileges Committee’s investigation focused on Johnson’s lies about Partygate, there are countless other examples of him deliberately misleading the nation on everything from Brexit, to his non-existent “40 new hospitals”, to disgraceful smears against his political opponents.'

Further announcements of this type are presumably in the pipeline as Labour doubles down on its profoundly ill-conceived 'fiscal credibility drive'. It'd be a lot easier if they simply cut to the chase and said they were going to ask the Tories to write their next general election manifesto...

Three disturbing (but not unexpected) takeaways from this speech by Starmer:

- his 'radical vision' is code for the continuing and dramatic shift by Labour to the right.
- the reference to going 'further and deeper than New Labour’s rewriting of clause IV' is a pointed message to the left that they can feck off and keep fecking off.
- Starmer now considers himself to represent the real Tory tradition.

We're now at a stage with where the only difference between Labour & Conservative is that the Conseratives will gladly throw you under a bus if they think it will benefit them in someway. While Labour will gladly throw you under a bus just because they're some of the nastiest, vilest most petty minded individuals in the country.

Question about .

What direct local powers do MPs have? Do they have any say over how the local authority spends its budget? Or is their power limited to the influence they might wield over the central government?

British pplitics is messed up. The labour leader is supposed to be conservative and the conservatives are linked to the russians… MI5 refused to investigate ‘Russian spy’s’ links to Tories, says whistleblower theguardian.com/politics/2023/
