The imagery has quite old antecedents: you see it, for example, in illustrations for the original tale of #SnowWhite, by the #BrothersGrimm. But I’ve never encountered a really intelligent history or analysis of this image. It reached its peak on the covers of #sciencefiction #magazines 1930-60, but you still see contemporary examples: think of Ripley in her panties sleeping away the light years in the #alienmovies 2/6

Did you know that the #BrothersGrimm not only published their famous fairy tale collection, but also a _second_ two-volume collection of German folk tales?

This collection, called "Deutsche Sagen", focused on local legends rather than the more "universal" fairy tales, often referring to real world locations and people.

It was translated into English as "German Legends of the Brothers Grimm" in 1979 by Donald Ward, and never reprinted.

Maybe I will publish my own translation one day...
