It's the remains of one of eight Imperial Palaces built by/for Charlemagne/Karl der Große in the first quarter of the 9th century CE.

You can't spit without hitting the remains of a medieval castle, palace, fortification, etc in much of Europe. People living in houses with thousand year old foundations is kinda the "norm" in many places in Europe.

Here's the Imperial Palace laid out over the modern town.

WATCH; No Buildings Without This Dredger! Dredger Charlemagne carries her load to Ipswich, Monday 31 July.
Most of us aren't very aware of where things come from - but a vast amount of aggregates - that's stuff like sand, gravel and shingle, used in the construction industry - come from the bottom of the sea.
Charlemagne can dredge at a depth of up to 6o metres, and can carry over 10,000 tons of aggregate - that's an impressive ship.

By all accounts, though he's interred at Aachen, the palace here was his favorite, with the vineyards, orchards, and bee gardens sparking joy.

She woke up just as I was sneaking out of the house, so I was Shanghai'd into doing a store run.

I decided to chill at the Heidesheimer Gate on the return journey.

I just noticed that while the stone house incorporates the actual Imperial Palace wall, the stuccoed house is built slightly off the wall. One can kinda make out the Palace wall on the 3rd house between the two, which has a portion of wall sticking through it's roof, seemingly attached to the stucco house.

A doorway scavenged from the Imperial Palace adorns someone's front door.

It's not unusual at all for houses to incorporate looted medieval architecture here.

This explains a lot to me, as I live smack dab in (one of) Charlemagne's Imperial Palaces, and I do love ...

Also, some examples of "modern" buildings being built onto pre-existing medieval defensive walls.

Modern is a relative term. Some houses here have foundations dating to the 800s, or even earlier. A maintained house built in 1623 on even older foundations doesn't look much different on the outside than a house built in 2023.

Medieval flower boxes.

Many houses here have flower boxes out front, that have their origins in the 9th century bee gardens of the Imperial Palace.

One finds these all over in the general Palace grounds; the bee gardens were important to Charlemagne. There are many, many of them.
