47 years ago today on November 17, 1975 the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank. The American Great Lakes freighter sank in a Lake Superior gale with the loss of all 29 hands. Launched on June 7, 1958 the 'Fitz' was the largest ship on the Great Lakes. The sinking was immortalized in song by Gordon Lightfoot.

On this day 47 years ago 29 sailors died on the wreck of the #EdmundFitzgerald, one of #LakeSuperior's most famous ore carriers.
In 1976 Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot immortalized the disaster with his famous song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

Today in 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald, sinks beneath the waves. All 29 of her crew die. Many theories of why she sunk have been put forward, including rogue waves & total structural failure.
The wreck is found on Nov. 14, in Canadian waters, broken in two.
