I think the rise of #gangstarap and super commercial rap in the 90's set a shit example for younger would be rappers and it seems that's where most of the energy went, with big labels throwing their weight behind a lot of garbage.

I really think #mixtapes are where it's at. I discovered so much good shit that way, they were so creative, but my old ass wouldn't even know where to get them today. HELP! The Dead Prez / Gangsta Grillz mix Tape with DJ Drama (linked below) is IMO the best music DP ever put out. For those who don't know about DJ Drama def check out this podcast about him and how he got busted for making mixtapes.
