I've now read the Wikipedia article about the #GoughWhitlam dismissal, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975_Australian_constitutional_crisis . Is that article basically fair and complete? What else should I read to understand the affair?

Also, why wasn't there a joint sitting to resolve the deadlock between the Senate and the House? If I understand correctly, PM Whitlam had used one earlier in his premiership.

@freakazoid I will have to read up on the #GoughWhitlam affair before I give you an intelligent comment. I did learn about it a number of years ago, but the only thing I really retained is that the GG dismissed the PM before the PM could ask the Queen to dismiss the GG. But I don't fully trust my memory even on that point.

I've also read the claim that it was all at the behest of the CIA. It's possible.

I'll look into it.
