Really enjoyed this podcast episode of UCLA Housing Voice covering Auckland's #upzoning.

No North American cities have zoned to midrise apartments over most of their land area like Auckland did. This was big enough to provide a strong case study, and it seems to have worked. Multifamily housing production increased by 10-fold, and initial changes in prices suggest a win-win for both existing homeowners and potential renters.

We wont end homelessness and housing-instability until we really evaluate who owns housing and why. The values and concerns of the property owning glass are not aligned with the needs and demands of the working poor. We will not end homelessness with Housing Vouchers. We need to change how housing is owned.

🧵I've worked in the Homelessness Services sector in the USA for about 8 years but I've only recently really started to read up on how other countries are responding to their homelessness. The differences are striking but simple, and yet still too subtle for most people to really understand. I hope I'll be able to use mastodon as a platform to write about the differences and what the USA NEEDS TO DO to solve homelessness.

I want advocates in the USA to fully understand that this means we need more *public housing* in the USA and we need public housing to be better than ever. Simply saying "Housing First" isn't clear enough for people who don't get it. We won't house our homeless neighbors with greedy landlords in the way.

If you believe that housing is a human right, and you advocate for Housing First, you need to start studying the failing federal housing polices coming out of HUD. Study the disinvestments to public housing, and the red tape weighing down the homeless services programs funded by HUD. Become an informed advocate and don't get fooled into accepting more watered down stop-gap "assistance" programs.
