Andy Haldane, chair of the levelling up advisory council, now admits, 'If you ask most people across the UK right now, have you felt the fruits of having been levelled up, they’d say ‘no’, or ‘not really’, or perhaps most optimistically ‘not yet'!

Admirable honest, I suppose, but once again it a Tory policy that is over-promises but under-delivery;

the only Q. that remains is: was #levellingup ever a serious intent?

To which the answer is, of course, NO!

A recent survey by Savills ranks West Bridgford in Rushcliffe as the 13th best place to live in the UK. It has a supine Tory MP (Ruth Edwards, who replaced Ken Clarke) and a Tory led council and apparently the Proms in the Park was paid for by the Levelling Up fund. Sunak wasn’t kidding about changing the formulas so money went from the most deprived areas to the Tunbridge Wells and WBs of this world. Pink fizz and Abba tribute bands all round! Hurrah!

Indeed. I lived there for three years and saw with my own eyes that while the standard of living may not be *completely* homogeneous across its towns and regions, it’s a lot more even than in the UK. The way they achieve that is ensconced in policy and legislation.

The 'left behind place' term is an uneasy one: in a soundbite era, does it help in appreciating the problem, or does it hinder change?
