It was near Bijolia, late April 2006, we’d slept on the quarry floor, hewn sandstone slabs positioned to shelter us from the desert nighttime temperature drop when bedlam broke out.
I arrived at the nearby burning temple, water buckets being conveyed, shouting, frantic efforts to stop the flames and a wizened old priest in orange robes grinning into the fire. I approached him, annoyed he wasn’t helping.
His reply, “no worry, Sahibji, we rebuild better next time…”
It was a bitter cold morn in the ashram, outside Mysuru, in late 2004 when he said, build your character & lose your reputation. Your character is who you are at your core, your reputation what others think you are. Damn everybody else’s perspective, focus on a constructive you and be free.
It resonates to this day.

Still getting used to here post the bird place. One thing the shift has cemented into me is the knowledge that life gets better when you understand who deserves an explanation, who deserves one answer and who deserves absolutely no response or one moment of your time.

One of the invaluable lessons of sobriety has been the reality that if you’re serious about it, you need to understand that discomfort is not an option but a requirement.
Then again, I’ve been around enough tight corners to know, a man matures when he no longer believes that discomfort is uncomfortable.
Think on that.
