I'm very much enjoying Louise Penny's Gamache series. I recently finished the third book and decided to write a review to follow those of the first and second books in the series. There are currently 18 books in the series to date, though there could be more eventually. Meanwhile, here are some thoughts about "The Cruelest Month".

For some reason, this frame reminded me of "Three Pines" - the town of the series - except the fact that this is much further down South than the imaginary town.

I was really hoping the TV adaptation of Louise Penny's Three Pines series would be bilingual (or maybe even multilingual, if First Nations languages were featured), with subtitles for different audiences. Frustratingly, the English version does have bits of French dialog - subtitled - but just bits. Like Gabri and Olivier will exchange words in French, or Gamache and Jean-Guy will go into French for line or two. If the producers understand people can read 1/2 >

- based on the series by , a surprisingly compassionate & ethical of the Canadian Surete visits the small village of Three Pines to solve a murder. He becomes enmeshed in the villager's lives as he battles police corruption. Casting for Gamache was excellent but only superficial attention is paid to the eclectic villagers & Three Pines itself. The choice to make them both seem more sinister than welcoming was frustrating. Amazon Prime

@debdiscourse Thanks for sharing the Guardian interview! Did not know Louise Penny based Gamache on her late husband. I’ve read the first four books, and plan to read more. Just finished The Murder Stone on Prime. Three Pines isn’t exactly like book but worth watching. Kind of like the Agatha Raisin tv series not like the M.C. Beaton books but still fun to watch.

@recantha BTW Rossif Sutherland who plays Jean-Guy Beauvoir is Donald Sutherland’s son. Had no idea until I started watching/enjoying this series. I recommend Louise Penny’s books as well though I haven’t read all yet.

As a book nerd, bird nerd, and poet with an oftentimes vulgar mouth, I have just seen my future and it is Ruth Zardo from Three Pines carrying a duck and a copy of Frankenstein through the snow to book club. 🪿📚🖋

Anyone watching who read the books?
I think the characters are so well cast, but they are much more loveable in the books.

Also, the town itself is a character, and we aren't getting that at all.

But overall, I love the books for themselves, and the TV series is well done if I could stop comparing it to the books!

Would love to hear others' thoughts.

ahhhhh just read the new book in one four hour go. it was very good and so well plotted BUT I need to stop reading semi-horrifying mysteries shortly before bed.

no spoilers, but one thing that Louise Penny does so well is to create multidimensional characters that then pop up several books later (although I’m still waiting for one guy from book 10 to come back 👀)

, the writer of the books upon which is based, is being interviewed on this morning and I now know a whole lot more about than I did an hour ago, most notably that the character is drawn from her late husband Michael.

The series makes the townspeople into undeveloped but vaguely antagonistic meat-puppets, the town into a creepy-feeling void, and only VERY vaguely suggests anything amiss in the Sûreté.

I really really wanted to like this, and despite its many shortcomings I'll probably still see it through, but it's a big disappointment

There's a First Nations story added, which is fine, but the bread and butter of the series isn't the mysteries, it's the endearing, and endearingly complicated, residents of Three Pines (the town in which many of the books are set), and the extremely dark, complex, political machinations within Gamache's Sûreté de Quebéc.

"Three Pines" is based on Louise Penny's "Chief Inspector Gamache" series of mysteries. The writing is not up to Ms Penny's standards. It reminds me of the AppleTV+ "Foundation" in that it takes character names, basic plotting, and some situations, and takes them someplace the origin material never went and never would have gone.
