Very excited to be starting off a week of annual leave with #Yellowface by #rfkuang. I loved #Babel (a critique of academia and capitalism combined with a magic system based on language and translation: all very much up my street!) so I have high hopes for this.

@purplepadma Probably no chance of a British production making a TV series out of this. 😁 The author has done a trilogy earlier, so there is enough rope left at the end for a continuation. Though I'd prefer she sticks to friendship/race/colonialism/history instead of the characters aiming for grand acts.

@iwashyna I definitely felt like the author was out of her strong domain once she entered stuff like murder and holding a country hostage. That sort of thing is super hard to pull off in a book. If she had gone for some sort of different ending that focused on friendship or human relationships instead of a grand one, the book could've been so much better.

Babel has this fantastic plot where the 19th century world is driven by technology created by linguists, harnessing the meaning lost in translation. ✨

Weaker towards the end, but R. F. Kuang has put in a lot of language and history research into this book.

Babel (2022) von R. F. Kuang. Ich habe den Dark-Academia-Trend nicht so verfolgt, aber dass diese postkoloniale Kritik am europischen Universitätswesen dringend notwendig war, leuchtet sofort ein. Mit einer brillant konzipierten Magieform macht Kuang die politische Bedeutung von Übersetzungen sichtbar und verstrickt ihre Figuren in perfide Machtstrukturen, an deren Ende nur die Revolution stehen kann. @paraic @bookstodon @linguistics If speculative is ok, then there's #RFKuang's recent novel Babel - set in an alternative history where there's a kind of 'law of conservation of meaning' that allows the meaning left over after translating from one language to another to be harnessed for good and evil.

I have just started reading "The poppy wars" by R. F. Kuang. So far I'm very intrigued by it. If you are into fantasy (i think the description calls it historical fantasy) you should give it a try.
