@louisrcouture Quebeckers (especially francophones) are more insulated from the US culturally, and therefore less affected by the ideological fashions that come from there than English Canadian elites. But we're not fully protected: there is still an empty spot where the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald belongs in Montréal.

A few weeks ago, I lamented that the #ResidentialSchools had been mandatory, seizing children and permitting no escape from abuse; education of children is after all the duty primarily of their parents. #LordBlack claims that #SirJohnAMacdonald "opposed the imposition of mandatory attendance." [0]

FWIW, I read a claim today that attendance at #ResidentialSchools was voluntary until 1920.

I knew nothing about #EgertonRyerson , other than that Ontarians named a university after him. If the #NationalPost article gives an accurate picture, then it seems the horrible features of #ResidentialSchools were not his fault.

(On a related topic, note that #SirJohnAMacdonald wasn't responsible for starting the residential school system either; that was a #Liberal initiative, set up while Sir John A. was out of power due to the #PacificScandal .)

Francophones have long had a hostility to #SirJohnAMacdonald ; but the toppling of his statue in #Montréal was opposed by the general public as well as by the provincial politicians.
