The ‘horns’ on a giraffe’s head are actually bony protrusions called ossicones, just like those of rhinos, Male #giraffes use them to fights with other males over territory and mating rights. 🦒 #WorldGiraffeDay
More #WorldGiraffeDay thoughts.
Zafara, was a giraffe sent as a present in 1827 to Charles X. Arriving by ship, she walked the 900km from Marseilles to Paris, accompanied by naturalist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire and several cows (for milk). A sensation everywhere and sparking a fashion craze: the first giraffe seen in Europe for three hundred years.

Quick facts about giraffes

3. Girrafe sleep and give birth while standing, they need only 5 to 30 min sleep in every 24 hours.
4. Girrafe heart is the biggest of any land mammal with an approximately 11kg, it can pump a blood at a pressure twice that of an average human heart which is 60 litres around its body every minute.

A giraffe’s spots are much like human fingerprints. No two individual giraffes have exactly the same pattern.
