Um, I've, um, given all my characters names starting with G. Help me find a new name for minor character "Gilmour Glover" please!
It's #Year1819 #Regency; GG's a well-networked wealthy lawyer & MP for Clackmannanshire (though he'll never go there). He's monosyllablic & goes out to dinner only where he knows he'll be well fed. Random fact - he knows a lot about silver hallmarks.
Very happy to credit the best offer. Just - no names beginning with G!
This is a Concealed Shoe.
Round about 1820 someone poured her hopes, good wishes, prayers into this well-worn boot & hid it on top of a wallhead in her house. In a lovely domestic example of geomancy, she stored her good luck token for the future.
This concealed shoe wasn't hidden with any accompanying items (bottles, ribbons, bits of bone etc) though many were.
And 200 years later, I get to marvel at it.

Down the river to #Greenwich to see ships & fans, pies & pints.
A good day.

How meta is this? At the #BritishMuseum to study #GeorgeScharf and here's the British Museum by Scharf.
Having fun.

Mrs F sells her jewels—part 2
Part 1 [https://bityl.co/Fq36] looked at why I couldn’t send Mrs F across town to a jeweller & needed to find a local one?
I don’t know #London well so I didn’t use a modern map: roads get renamed, or indeed demolished [https://bityl.co/Fq3j]. I started with Matthew Sangster’s amazing compilation of area maps [https://bityl.co/Fq3j] to narrow down some #Year1819 streets close to her base in #CavendishSquare.

Firstly, #London streets in #Year1819 were unsafe on your own, particularly for women. #Cruikshank illustrates the dangers. There’s the risk of pickpockets & the streets were also uneven, insanitary & insanely busy. Mrs F hasn’t got anyone she can call on to keep her safe. So, no #walking.
Could she hire a hackney coach or the smaller hackney chariot? Yes, but at a cost of an impossible shilling a mile—all her cash. https://bityl.co/Folt So that’s out too.

Just had an apologetic email from #NationalMaritimeMuseum.
"Sorry, we do not have the staff resources research your question.
"However, here is a pdf of a relevant letter. [Which answers my query!] And links to useful #BritishLibrary resources. And to another relevant research source. Here's a list of books we've got that you'll need. We've also got a research guide on the #EIC which will help. Also come and see us."
Pretty damned impressed with this.

OTD the minor aristocrat whose #diaries I'm transcribing bought a #chandelier for his country house from #royal #glassmaker Perry (https://bityl.co/Fk1z).
These status symbols weren't cheap. In 1818 the #Regent paid £4290 for 9 chandeliers for the #RoyalPavilion (https://bityl.co/Fk26). My chap would've gone less OTT & more like the 2x 1782 #Chatsworth chandeliers—£210. After inflation, say £150, plus ~£75-100pa for decent candles.

Here's St George's #HanoverSquare — https://bityl.co/FiEQ. The Metropolitan Ecclesiastical Directory says: "The congregation of this church includes more of the nobility & gentry than will be met with at any other church in the metropolis." Gorgeous #Georgian #architecture & interior.
BUT round the back, #GeorgeScharf (my idol) shows us the lively shops & quirky architecture of #MillStreet. Guess the nobility & gentry didn't go round the back much.

Checking out the #OrderOfPrecedence for a set piece scene #London #Year1819 #BelgraveChapel. Helpful advice from #Wikipedia:
"In Scotland, the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland ranks immediately below the sovereign or consort (depending on their respective sex), but only when the General Assembly is in session..." and when the wind is in the north and the Archbishop of Canterbury doesn't mind.

In which I draft an #introduction, delete it all apart from "I", restart, pause for tea, write a little, order a book on a random side-topic, think of a neat line for my WIP **, notice an anachronism, google it, disappear down a website for an afternoon, twoot about a detail I've discovered, pause for tea, talk a lot, write a little...

I want my #writing (#romance #London #Year1819) to avoid words that are *too* anachronistic, so I referred to #WernersNomenclature of #Colours in order to describe a dress.
It proved more challenging than I'd thought. Not because there isn't a good range of colours, but because the names just aren't #romantic enough for me. The #red I dreamt of is "Gallstone Yellow" & in order to imagine "Straw Yellow", you'd have to picture a #PolarBear. Sienna Yellow? "Vent parts of Tail of #BirdOfParadise."
