It is important to understand that there are not piles and piles of orphans in South Korea. What there is, is an extremely conservative view of the family unit, and this does not allow you to be unmarried, when you have a child or, god forbid, a single mother. All of the children being adopted, have parents who are not allowed to keep them.

We shouldn't promote adoption, we should promote family preservation.

Last year I, and hundreds of other Korean adoptees, submitted applications to the Korean Truth and Reconciliation Comission asking them to investigate our adoptions. I have just received an e-mail with a questionaire. These are two of the questions.

What does it cost to adopt a child? These are the current rates (in Danish Kroner) for adoption through Danish International Adoption. The argument for adoption is often that it helps a poor orphan. That it's better to save one child, than no children. 90% of children have at least one living parent. Almost 100% have close living relatives. Do they get that money?
