Jacques Tourneur’s Timbuktu is an old-fashioned Foreign Legion adventure movie, in fact even a little old-fashioned by the standards of 1958. That’s probably why I liked it so much. As a bonus it stars Victor Mature and Yvonne de Carlo.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

James Whale's The Man in the Iron Mask (1939), based (loosely) on the final instalment of Alexander Dumas’ tales of the Three Musketeers.

Visually impressive and worth seeing for some bravura acting, especially Louis Hayward’s extraordinary performances. Joan Bennett is good as well. Entertaining.

Arabian Nights (1942), Universal’s first epic made using the three-strip Technicolor process.

It has the charm of an adventure B-picture but it looks very impressive. It’s quite content to provide spectacle and harmless entertainment. And there's plenty of romance.

With Maria Montez as a dancing girl who wants to be a queen.

The Mark of Zorro (1920), the first of Douglas Fairbanks’ big-budget swashbucklers. Fairbanks produced and co-wrote the film.

Nobody did swashbuckling better than Fairbanks Sr. His formula for the swashbuckling adventure has never been improved upon. This movie is outrageous amounts of fun.

The Master of Ballantrae, a late 1953) Errol Flynn swashbuckler). Based on a Robert Louis Stevenson tale.

Two brothers get caught up in Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion. Errol Flynn is the elder but wilder brother. He likes wine, women and gambling.

The years were starting to take their toll on Flynn but he still has star quality.

The Golden Blade is a 1953 swashbuckler starring Rock Hudson and Piper Laurie. One of the many swashbucklers of that era inspired by the tales of the Arabian Nights.

A bit formulaic but extremely well-made, the plotting is solid, it looks great, the cast is excellent and it has the right mix of action, adventure and romance with some dashes of humour.

Deathstalker II (1987), one of the many sword & sorcery epics churned out by Roger Corman in the 80s. This one is more deliberately cheesy and hammy than most but it’s good-natured fun.

Silly and goofy but fast-moving, exciting and amusing. If you’re in the mood for a real beer and popcorn movie this is just the thing.
