Dr. Jose Nafafe (Univ of Bristol) will be in the US in Nov '23 talking at Princeton, BU, & MSU about Lourenço da Silva Mendonça, a 17thC Black African abolitionist who brought a lawsuit before the papal court to end slavery. Dr. Nafafe hopes to make new connections and bring his talk to additional locations. If you're able to help schedule something, I hope you'll reach out to him.

Two new books came in the mail! Both of them were shipped from Sweden, since I could not find copies for sale in the US.

, help gratefully appreciated. Tl;dr I'm working on a first pass at learning a few things about Medieval Mali social organization. Reading a Gale Database source that talks about "clans" in society. Says clans often had an assigned/traditional occupation. I can't do more research using "clan" so I'm guessing that's not a standard term. Can anyone point me to some more useful terminology (ad even sources?!?!?) for these , maybe, occupational social groups ?????

Ibn Khaldun pointed out the whiteness-as-default attitude prevalent in Europe, 700 years ago:

"The inhabitants of the north are not called by their color, because the people who established the conventional meanings of words were themselves white. Thus, whiteness was something usual and common to them, and they did not see anything sufficiently remarkable in it to cause them to use it as a specific term."

How does one a curriculum at an educational institution whose mission has been distorted by Western colonizing forces?

One group of students at the Makerere Institute of Social Research in read the by as a way to start answering that question.

You won't be surprised that Wiley wants 10 USD for you to be able to read this article over a 48 hour period, but as a one-off I think it's worth it.

A great article on the history of the deep ties between Tanzania and South Africa in the struggle against apartheid and the genesis of the Organisation of African Unity.

(2/3) The whole situation was bizarre...Condescending (You know, *apparently, they didn't have photography back in early Feudal Japan 😅).

And just makes me think of how ingrained the need to control , manipulative and whitesplain, African history is; Especially when those stories don't fit the dominant narrative.

And how strong those forces can be in manipulating education and self awareness.

Today I learned about Ibn Battuta, the most important explorer you've never heard of.

Starting in modern
"He travelled more than any other explorer in pre-modern history, totalling around 117,000 km (73,000 mi), surpassing Zheng He with about 50,000 km (31,000 mi) and Marco Polo with 24,000 km (15,000 mi)"
