Early morning visit today to Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. In addition to the aforementioned , got nice looks at a flock of foraging in the pond, and an elegant pair of which are rare to the area.

Okay, uploading to a separate site didn't work as well as I'd hoped, so sticking with posting pictures here.

While looking at the latest Sentinel 2 imagery (Great site if you haven't seen it sentinel2explorer.esri.com/ ) I saw that the excess water in the area had doubled the size of a reservoir and filled a pond marked on the map I'd never noticed. So off I went to explore.

Bounced a bit on a dry dike before coming to a sand dune. Carefully crawled to the top (me and sand are not the bestest of friends) and saw a wide expanse of desert was now a glittering lake.

I spotted my first American Avocets of the year wading around in the muck on the shore.

Lots of yellow-headed blackbirds croaking and calling from the trees and reeds surrounding the water.

There's a large tree that serves as a nest area for Great Egrets though today there was a bunch of Double-crested Cormorants and Great-tailed Grackles.

Bobbing in the water were a bunch of ducks. Canvasbacks, American Coots, Ruddy Ducks, and Mallards that I could make out.

All in all, pretty good day of checking out a new water area after work.

Good morning. ☕☕☕

It stormed last night (I think) and we apparently lost power. I didn't notice until this morning. Which is just fine.

I let the dogs out and made coffee as usual. But when I let the dogs out, I noticed something small running across the yard. Charlie was hot on its trail. But whatever it was, (rabbit or squirrel) it disappeared through the hole under the fence.

Quiet moment ...

This American avocet was hunting on the bayou at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, Cameron Parish, Louisiana. I really like the peacefulness the photo portrays.

"The American Avocet takes elegance to a new level. This long-legged wader glides through shallow waters swishing its slender, upturned bill from side to side to catch aquatic invertebrates. It dons a sophisticated look for summer with a black-and-white body and a rusty head and neck. A series of an American Avocet feeding at the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The relatively soft focus is due to heat distortion b/c I'm shooting from just above ground level on a baking mudflat.
