Today’s adventure in “Stories Make America”: Winthrop’s ‘city on a hill’ sermon as a (problematic) communitarian vision of Americanness, connected to early 19th century national myth making using puritans, pivoted to Sedgwick’s 1820s novel _Hope Leslie_ and her gender and race critique of puritans, to the creation of thanksgiving in 1860s, and ended with Reagan’s damn inaugural.
