I think this is such a fantastic story for the second reason Dr. #AmySturgis provides, namely that the story of the #Acadians offers insight into an alternative reality, or what could have been had Europeans had established relations with Native Americans NOT based on conflict and conquest, but rather nurtured relations of mutual respect, accommodation and “trade not raid.” As Dr. Sturgis points out, “The Acadians interacted with, intermarried with the local #Mi’kmaq, [and] shared their religion. They developed a syncretic religion that combined elements of both cultures. They developed a language that combined elements from both cultures. And in fact the name “Acadia” is partially taken from the French and partially taken from the Mi’kmaq.”
