Assaulted During Lecture at Northern Michigan College

By Sierra Clark, Contributing Writer, June 29, 2023

"A public lecture featuring transnational pipeline and energy company Enbridge last week escalated to the assault of an water protector and allies protesting the controversial project.

"The event, hosted by North Central Michigan College (NCMC) in Petoskey on June 22, featured an Enbridge representative speaking about the Great Lakes Tunnel Project that would house a section of Line 5 under the Straits of Mackinac.

"During the lecture, the environmental protestors entered the NCMC Library Center and were confronted physically by several people attending the luncheon event."

More coverage of Native Sovereignity Day at the Minnesota State Capitol.

cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/min

Worth noting is that only the 11 federally recognized tribes were represented. I saw no mention of the Mendota Mdewakanton Sioux who reside a mile or two from where I live. They have been seeking federal recognition for many years.

Instead of a "day", how about a Native Sovereignty year? Repeated every year?

Stupid waste of money by Mille Lacs county. The State of Minnesota should NOT cover those fees.

“We see you everyday. But do you see us?” said Kevin Dupuis, chair of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. “We’re not invisible. We know we’re not invisible. But sometimes the system looks at us or puts it in a perspective that we are invisible.”

I am crushed by this observation. The hunter-gatherers of Europe lost every thing to agriculurists. I wonder how much racism or the equivalent occurred for the European hunter-gather tribes.

I believe we could have done much better.

I hope Native Americans continue to assert their treaty rights so as to protect the environment against degradation. What does it mean to have the right to fish if there are no fish to fish?

I need a word that speaks to the preservation, restoration, revitalization, and resurgance of something. I'm my specific case, in regards to Native American tribes in Minnesota teaching and learning their nearly lost languages.

Both the Dakota and Anishinaabe in Minnesota are undertaking efforts to preserve and restore their languages.

"In the late 1800s, the U.S. government created a policy that banned speaking or teaching in any language other than English in schools. This was standard practice in Native American boarding schools. For generations, Native children were taken from their families, banned from speaking their native language or engaging in traditional religious practices, and often abused if they didn’t comply."

"Some non-Indigenous people may recognize snow snake from their days as a Boy Scout."

This was the first I heard of snow snakes. I found the article frustrating because it wasn't until the 7th paragraph where it became apparent to me it is a game and not until the 20th or so paragraph where I learned it involves sliding a wooden snow snake through a hoop.

I finished reading "The Night Watchman" by Louise Erdrich, a fiction novel consisting of intertwined story lines involving the Chippewa inhabitants of Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota. One of the story lines is based upon events in the author's grandfather's life.

It was well written and kept my interest. All of the main characters and concerns and thoughts felt real to me.
