I've had a long running volley with a film geek friend over whether Atom Egoyan is washed up as a director. Because after ARARAT, his films start to become wildly uneven. I love all those early films so much and I once interviewed Egoyan years back. (He was super nice and genuinely taken aback and delighted that I knew his filmography so well. The publicist had difficulty shuttling him away from me. He wanted to stay and talk!)

I would hold up REMEMBER as a solid late offering to defy the thesis! It has an incredible performance from Christopher Plummer. It has all the earmarks of a great Egoyan film: the way we underestimate people, the focus on neglected members of society, the haunting baggage we all carry.

Is REMEMBER up there with the early work? No. But much like an underdog sports team in a bad slump, you have to keep rooting for filmmakers with distinct voices. So I will remain Team Egoyan!

I watched THE CAPTIVE tonight: a later Atom Egoyan film. What in the hell happened to the man? This guy was once the untouchable king of Canadian indie film up through 1999. I'll even give him ARARAT and ADORATION for quirks and WHERE THE TRUTH LIES for fun titilation. But since 2009, Egoyan has become a sad parody of himself. THE CAPTIVE's story logic is ridiculous even if I can't gainsay that there are SOME moments showing the old touch. But what in the hell?
