I was suddenly asked to play at my home coffeehouse for this weekend's arts festival – a 45-minute set. And to my own amazement, I put together a set list I'm completely confident in playing and singing within 10 minutes. Bonus: probably won't drive people from the shop. As someone who didn't learn an instrument until 57, and waited even longer to start to sing, it's still amazing to me that this is even possible.

First run-through for what could be my first band ever. As a late starter in music, it's been *very* hard to find other people to play with, and this is a nice little group that has roughly the same level of experience plus a vocalist who's more advanced. Really fun to work out some songs and figure out the groove on bass – it's always different than what I've practiced on my own.

At #OpenMicNight last night, did several things I never do:
1) played bass while singing
2) asked a drummer to accompany me
3) widely failed at a song I'd played 1000 times, because of the new experience of having a drummer with me and giving him way too fast a tempo – and had a marvelous time doing it.
Eventually I just gave up on the planned changes and slipped into a groove, enjoyed that for a few bars, and then brought it to an end. Most fun I've had in a while.

#SundaySongs time! Going back to my roots as a #FlorenceAndTheMachine cover act*, this is one of my favorite songs, "Ship To Wreck."
Keys and vocals live as shown, added in some #KalaUBass and digital harmonus in #AbletonLive.

I had a rare opportunity to play music with other musicians this week, and it was fun to be in a band for a few hours. They wanted to play songs people knew and enjoyed hearing, and I learned two things about myself:
1. I'm now good enough to bash away at keys with a band, and even fill in some improv'd solos when called for.
2. I really just wanna sing weird, sad songs that confuse my audience.

Well . . . as a late-blooming #musician, one of my biggest challenges has been finding others on my level to play with – everyone else my age has decades of experience, and it's hard to fit in. But I posted a query locally and a nice group of musicians, some similarly new to playing, reached out – and it appears I'm in a band? Very excited to have the chance to play with others, do new things, and get better.

Had a fabulous #OpenMicNight last night – debuted a new original blues based on my ridiculous family history called "Clothespin Josephine" ("don't ya hit me with that clothespin bag"), and revisited a song I used to sing my kids at bedtime. Real whiplash, emotionally, but they went over very well. Recordings soon.

Joining this instance to share and find other #musicians. I'm a beginner, and post songs most Sundays.
This week's #SundaySong is one I've tried to do since I started singing and playing four years ago. Turns out what I needed to make it work was this year's Christmas present to myself, a beautiful #Kala #ElectricUkulele. There's some #KalaUBass layered underneath this as well.
This is Cracker's "Big Dipper."

After learning for several months on a #KalaUBass, I bought a “real” #bassguitar earlier this year, a 1987 Yamaha with a great sound. I’ll admit I found the shiny black look kinda boring but didn’t want to plaster it with stickers—then I found the perfect decal, an outline of the #FultonChainOfLakes (our favorite place) in the #Adirondacks, which made the perfect accent. If only I could play as cool as that looks.

I’m a #musician who started relatively late in life. I bounce around among instruments and right now I’m enamored of the #ukulele, which I’m trying to learn to play with a pick.
On Sundays I post DIY videos of #coversongs on FB and Insta. Here’s a song I first heard done by Peter Wolf and Shelby Lynne in 2010, “Tragedy.”
