New regulations on content platforms in the will mean companies go overboard with moderation to avoid large fines. Context-blind algorithms will limit debate and people in need of help will find it harder to get support.

"Messages of everyone using private chat services could be intercepted and scanned under a government mandate. It is a new form of mass surveillance. It is a highly intrusive and disproportionate measure that is being imposed by an almost invisible phrase in the bill."

Content scanning tech on our messages raises serious concerns about the consequence of false positive matches.

Here a father had his Google accounts locked and was investigated by the police for sharing a photo of his son with a doctor for diagnosis.

Content scanning software checks images and words for markers, or digital fingerprints, on social media and private messaging. When there’s a match, the AI will remove or report it. This includes false positives made by algorithms that can’t account for context.

🚨 Chat monitoring sneaked into Online Safety Bill through back door measure.

The spy clause goes beyond scanning public posts to include messaging platforms like Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger and Signal.

This is a disproportionate expansion in surveillance capacity that puts everyone's privacy at risk.

We urge people in the UK to write to your MP.

Age-verification will increase the collection of personal data. That information can be used and sold, including for fraud. It will also restrict access to support services for young people by creating a gated Internet.

Privacy is online safety.

Back in 2006, I thought that the Smoking Ban and proposals for ID Cards were unacceptably authoritarian. Had the proposal been "every website must take a mugshot before letting you use it" I probably would've laughed until my head fell off.

The age-verification system being tested by Instagram is 'less accurate for female faces and people with darker skin.' For under-24s 'its estimates can be off by up to 2.5 years.'

The permits any tech to check your age. From social media to search engines, what you can access online will be decided by biased AI running guesstimates.

Bad law creates injustice.

The very idea of "age-gating the Internet", per the ' , is an assault on free expression hidden behind the age-old reactionary canard of "think of the children".

They tried it with the failed "", and now it's back in expanded form.

The Internet was never designed to be a playground and children should not be being let loose on it. Parents should be expected to use widely-available parental controls and app/web filters to restrict content instead.

Culture Secretary, Michelle Donelan, told the Today programme that the Online Safety Bill is silent on what technology can be used for age-verification.

The role of age-gating the Internet will be filled by AI that's known for biased and discriminatory outcomes.

Our policy manager, Dr Monica Horten, says "companies are likely to use AI systems analysing biometric data including head and hand measurements, and voices" leading to a gated Internet.
