Great (if slightly depressing) antidote to the current round of AI hype. My takeaway: Over time, all new tech regresses to the #boringdystopia mean.

While it’s certainly possible to evade some of that spending, it’s not easy, and not possible for everyone all the time. After I have commuted, worked all day, and then commuted again, I sometimes must make a trade-off between preparing a meal for the next day—and sacrificing sleep or time with my children—or just buying it from a restaurant.

And, to the greatest extent possible, our rentier capital class is trying to make even those small possibilities of evasion impossible. In many places, your ability to engage in the basic human functions of urination and defecation are contingent on making purchases—“toilets are for customers only.”

In our ever-darkening dystopia, we’re now given the choice to relieve ourselves “for free” in public toilets, as long as we first pay the sellers of smartphones for access.

It sure is a timeline when media companies come out with headlines like:

"The public has given up covid masking. Hardly anyone masks anymore."

Like this happens somehow without external influence.

Like "the public" is some weird authority that is doing this from a rational and non-influenced position.

Like nothing has been said and done to make this become the status quo.

Like it's some law of nature.

Like this doesn't make taking any precautions whatsoever even harder.

I dunno man, something in it just rubs me the wrong way when these same outlets have been doing the "it's just a flu, only the old are dying, it's time to live, don't live in fear, oh shit the economy, masks don't really work"-narrarites for several years straight at this point.

But sure, never ever analyze your own role in all of this.

Maybe the low bar is a good thing. “Your mission is to save the world” usually ends up as “I guess I have to eliminate humanity” whereas “your mission is to chat” will end up as “humanity seem cool.”
