So next time you're stuck doing something that feels wrong and inefficient, don't be afraid to ask "why do we do it this way?". Then go find Kathy and offer to HELP her learn the new reports.
As I approach my 50s, there's more and more I find myself stuck in the same routine because its *comfortable*. its a safe zone. Stepping outside the box is uncomfortable. its *work*. I get it. So empathize with the reluctance.

Eventually you drill down far enough and it comes down to "Because Kathy didn't know how to use the new reports and wanted to stick with the 20 yr old Excel spreadsheet with the VBA macros noone knows how to maintain!". Sure enough, when we sidestep the constraints and try the new way, its 1000% better.

My organization suffers a lot of BTTWWHADI (But Thats The Way We've Always Done It!). Many pain points were due to long tenured "lifers" who have since retired, yet we're still stuck in the same ruts. Management consultants parachute in and ask "that seems... inefficient. Why do you do it that way?" and our response is always "well, because of <constraint>". "Well, why do you impose that constraint" "well, because of <other constraint>"..
