"Lower-income neighborhoods tend to be hottest, a city report found, and they have the least tree canopy. The same is true in cities across the country, where poor and minority neighborhoods disproportionately suffer the consequences of rising temperatures. Research shows the temperatures in a single city, from Portland, Oregon, to Baltimore, can vary by up to 20 degrees."

"In other words, the fundamental construct of life in Japan makes it easier to live healthier.
Huang calls this "default design" and he says it literally comes built in: The fact that Japanese cities are densely populated, but safe, allows for heavy reliance on public transport, for example. And populations that use public transport tend to walk more and get more exercise just by virtue of that design."

#afluenza and the #builtenvironment: find that these #indicators to characterize #patterns of #builtstructures are about equally important for predicting #energydemand and #CO2 #emissions as #GDP and other conventional factors. The area of built-up land per capita is the most important predictor, second only to the effect of GDP.

#Space matters for #CircularEconomy success in the #BuiltEnvironment. This is the result of a special session discussion the Anthropogenic and Natural Resources IOER-Research Group launched together with the Sustainable Buildings Group of Chalmers University of Technology in the annual conference of the 11th International Society on Industrial Ecology in Leiden, Netherlands #ISIE2023

*Sigh* I *really* try to not exist in an echo chamber when it comes to the #builtenvironment, but all signs point to there being a fundamental disconnect between where I see the #AEC industry and where it could be headed vs. the industry itself.
I’ve had yet another abstract related to helping #structuralengineers apply practical programming concepts in their daily work rejected from a #AEC #design practitioner’s conference. 🧵

Can the #BuiltEnvironment actually influence #TravelBehavior?
In this brand new #OpenAccess paper, “Heterogeneity in mode choice behavior: A spatial latent class approach based on accessibility measures,” authors Orrego-Oñate, Clifton, & Hurtubia tackle this age-old question by developing a novel, probability-based approach to estimating #travel #ModeChoice. Over dat gebouw gesproken: waarschijnlijk een enorme aanjager voor onze inschrijvingen hier bij #builtenvironment. Die zijn 28% hoger dan vorig jaar, terwijl de #hva over de hele linie zo’n 3% groeit.
Vanavond onze (laatste) open avond. Wat mij betreft doen we die niet. :-) Maar ja, dat mag niet. Dus sta ik toch weer mijn praatje af te draaien.
8. BEAUTY
A place of high-quality ‘Baukultur’ is beautiful.
High-quality Baukultur* takes into account the sensory perception and understanding of the relationship between objects, spaces and people, increasing people’s life satisfaction and quality of life.
It emphasises the need for positive aesthetic appreciation and a fulfilling relationship between people and the place.
- From ‘Eight criteria for a high-quality Baukultur, Davos Baukultur Quality System’:

*The expression baukultur embodies the cultural value of a high-quality, socially integrated and sustainable built environment. Baukultur (pronounced baw-cool-tor) is both the ethos of creating an environment we want to live in, and the processes involved in its creation.

Sharing School: Public Education as Public Space
Barcelona has some of the densest neighborhoods in Europe, so it is a city rife with conflicting demands over public space. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians quarrel over street space; young and elderly over what

🇺🇸 Southerner in the Pacific Northwest 🌈 (she/her)
My professional life is about studying and modeling that portion of the natural environment we call the #BuiltEnvironment, examining the choices we make about how #energy will move within it. My personal life is about seeking peace, freedom, and wisdom. Often that means getting OUT of buildings, remembering I’m a living animal, reading outside of my discipline, and unlearning... [...]

Today in #myfavoritethings, by popular demand, we have “A Pattern Language” (1977), by Alexander, Ishikawa, Silverstein et al.: a *luminous* compendium of practical insights into how the #builtenvironment might be best organized as to support human flourishing, across every stage of life. It is possibly the most humane document in all of #architectural thought. (The PDF I’ve linked here isn’t complete, sadly, but it will give you a very strong flavor of the work.) https://arl.human.cornell.edu/linked%20docs/Alexander_A_Pattern_Language.pdf
