On this day, 570 years ago, Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks under Mehmed the Conqueror. With its fall, the Roman Empire came to its final end. Constantine XI Palaiologos, the final leader of the empire founded by Augustus in 27 BC, died defending the city and his body was never found. The Roman Empire and Roman civilization ceased to exist after nearly 15 centuries and nearly 22 centuries respectively.
