M94

Magnitude 8.2 spiral galaxy located 16.0 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. M94 recently (10 million years ago) experienced a violent event that ejected millions of solar masses of material from its nucleus. The faint ring around M94 is a region of strong star formation. It gives the galaxy the appearance of a bone-white eye staring back at you.

La Superba

Magnitude 4.86 to 7.32 variable star located 1,010 light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. It has an atmosphere rich in carbon compounds that block all but red and infrared light from shining through. This makes the star far redder than nearly any other star in the sky. La Superba has begun to eject its outer layers and appears ready to form a new planetary nebula.

M3

Magnitude 6.39 global cluster located 33,900 light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. The cluster contains about 500,000 stars. It also has more than 200 known variable stars, the largest of any globular. Astronomers estimate M3 is younger than most globulars, with an age of some 8 billion years.
