A little #FrenchHistory as background during the riots: (edited from #Wikipedia)
Did you know that 1200 years ago as #Rome fell, the #Christian world was nearly conquered by the #Islam World?
The Carolingian Empire (800–888) was a large #Frankish-dominated empire in western and central Europe during the #EarlyMiddleAges.
In #AD800, the #Frankish king #Charlemagne was crowned emperor in Rome by #PopeLeoIII in an effort to transfer the #RomanEmpire from the #ByzantineEmpire to western Europe.

"Europe should look in the rear-view mirror and realise that it is losing a slice of its heritage, the very thing that made the continent what it is. Some of this is nostalgia, a remembrance of motoring past... For all their flaws, those cars had a certain je ne sais quoi. These days such journeys would take place aboard cookie-cutter suvs: roomy, plush—and destined to be forgotten."
I'm no fan of cars, but I definitely recognise a lot of this #Charlemagne piece in @TheEconomist
If you are European, you are most likely a descendant of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor. Scientists have shown that all Europeans share common ancestors from the ninth century or earlier. This means that you have millions of distant cousins across the continent and beyond.

Useless quote for 15 April:
"Quamvis enim melius sit bene facere quam nosse, prius tamen est nosse quam facere."
(Right action is better than knowledge; but in order to do what is right, we must know what is right.)
~ Charlemange, 784-785

This #spoliaSunday we're admiring the magnificent cover of a Carolingian gospel, with, at its centre, a stupendous #imperial #cameo of #Constantine and his family, before he started killing them off. #Charlemagne saw himself as the obvious heir to #Rome. 🧵

Someone should do a staged #opera version of #SirChristopherLee's #Charlemagne albums. Possibly with a cameo appearance by #Dracula.

Did you know that #Charlemagne was chastised for being superstitious?
The regent, like many others, wore a #talisman.
Made in the 9th century, the medallion was made of filigree goldwork with gems & an opening for hair of the virgin Mary & bones of Jesus.
It was likely used to guard against #evil & to #heal.
Charlemagne's advisor Alcuin was unimpressed - he scolded that carrying the holy ones in a sack, instead of one's heart, is
"holier-than-though superstition".

#Météo du samedi 28 janvier 2023 à Niort : journée très nuageuse avec quelques éclaircies en soirée. Min. : 3°. Max. : 5°. Bonne fête aux #Charlemagne.
The cathedral in Aachen contains the throne of #Charlemagne. Der Thron von Karl dem Großen steht im Aachener Dom.
Incredible. When #Charlemagne was crowned in the 9th century, #Rome is estimated to have had a population of only 30 000.

@geneafr

#OTD in 800, Charles, king of the Franks, went to Rome and was proclaimed Emperor by the pope Leo III. Nobody had been emperor for the last three and a half century. That put him on the path of becoming “Carolus Magnus” or, Charlemagne. Listen at: https://www.lafayettepodcast.com/1969630/11146754-charlemagne-king-of-the-franks-and-roman-emperor

The Throne of Charlemagne is located in Aachen Cathedral in Germany. The Cathedral was built on the orders of the first Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne who was buried there in 814. In 1978, it was one of the first 12 places to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
#Charlemagne is regarded as the founding father of both France and Germany. Napoleon, on his coronation as Emperor in 1804, described his own crown as the "Crown of Charlemagne",

In January 1417 Poggio Bracciolini discovered #DeRerumNatura (written by #Lucretius in the 1st century BC outlining #Epicureanism) in a German monastic library.
That copy was copied from an earlier 9th century text corrected by an Irish monk, #Dúngal.
Dúngal also wrote a book explaining to #Charlemagne how two solar eclipses could occur in the same year, and, incidentally, the structure of the #cosmos as he understood it.

I had to look that up. It was so very worth it.
