Another day, another check dam.

Water naturally accumulates in valleys as it flows downslope, but fast moving water cannot be utilized by the plants & animals that need it.

#CheckDams are a simple way to slow down water so that the soil has a chance to utilize the moisture before it makes its way to streams & rivers.

Check dams can be made from whatever materials are available but I usually use rocks b/c that’s what we have an abundance of.

Today Pax and I made a bunch of check dams along the uppermost valley on our land. When the snow melts in the spring, the check dams will slow rate the water moves downstream. When the land has time to absorb the moisture, more vegetation can to take root & feed more wildlife.

Additionally, the check dams will help recharge the aquifer during the dry season & reduce erosion of the topsoil into the canal below.
