I’m reading Chokepoint Capitalism in between other books.
So far, it’s good when focused on tech and digital rights management, but not so good when putting ideas into a broader historical context.
I found the use of mixed metaphors (moats, flywheels and hourglasses) to be tiresome early on and it’s hard to know if the idea of a ‘chokepoint’ adds anything to the discussion or whether it’s a mangled version of enclosure packaged as a new idea. DRM is enclosure, so the link should be a strong one.
Tbh it’s been a slog getting to page 63 and I’ve spent much of that time wishing they’d read any of Guy Standing’s books which focus on the theft of the commons, precarity and rentier capitalism. A look at a fee books on colonialism wouldn’t have gone astray either - or maybe listening to a speech or two by Moana Jackson.
BUT it’s early days, and I still have a way to go, and it may gather steam and a deeper intersectional context as it goes.

Had the privilege last night of attending a convo on the new book Chokepoint Capitalism by Rebecca Giblin and Cory Doctorow, moderated by Andrew Leigh, MP. Was equal parts fascinating and terrifying. It uses Social Media (the platforms we know and kinda love) to anti-influence the influencers, or list products to avoid and boycott services.

This can be effective online activism against corporate greed, middlemen (choke point capitalism) like Spotify, Shopify, online art and music platforms, etc...

It fights back against the influencers who attempt to sell these products.

@pluralistic @aristotle It would be an interesting study to remove the Middleman Economy / #ChokepointCapitalism to see which corporations or their branches are removed... as well as where the responsibility falls on the various victims. Things like self-marketing, self-production and platform development. I can see those responsibilities being more of a partnership with others in their various fields of expertise than a forced corporate service.
