I’ve begun a drawing that uses my own photo as a ref for the background and one from pixabay as a ref for the fox kits, while following a tutorial on the kits (Bonny Snowdon). The loose sketching is freaking me out, lol. I usually draw in detail, section by section, but am making myself try this new (to me) method of sketching in tonal values across the foxes before adding detail. It’s good to experiment — even if you’re rubbish at sketching, as I am 🫣

The realism some accomplish in boggles my mind. Sheer mad props for artmaking badassery! I struggle against defaulting to realism (happily I'm not that good!). I'm most practiced at & that's the approach I bring to colored pencil as I learn it. (In fact I got colored pencils this year so I could work in color while lolling on the couch with a cat on my lap--not feasible with wet media IMHO). Choosing subjects/refs a challenge right now.

I pretty much hated Pastelmat (a cellulose-based surface) until I began working on this wolf. It is giving me so many options for texture — which is ideal for wolf hair. I love it! Thank you to Bonny Snowdon for the tutorial and Susan Richardson for the reference photo.

So I've started playing around with those watercolour pads I picked up on Friday, And my grog, there's more tooth in this than the second Aliens film.

Back when I was trying to be an animation student and draw everything with line, I drew on smooth paper only. So this is WAY outside my comfort zone, and that's a good thing.

Top left is blending blue and yellow, while the rest is a skin tone exercise, but trying out rubbing alcohol to blend.
