The latest from Jon Bateman (who alas doesn’t appear to be on the Toot Site yet) looks to be drawing heavily on his portion of the talk he gave with @gavinwilde at #CYBERWARCON back in November.
Paired with Gavin’s recent paper on how Russia’s use of cyber operations against Ukraine in 2022 has boiled down to “intelligence activities during wartime” (https://infosec.exchange/@WylieNewmark/109502823338072677), Bateman’s paper further explores the demonstrated limitations of cyber ops as a warfighting instrument while providing yet more evidence that the “cyberwar” thesis this year has been more clickbait than fact. Did the cyberwar really happen? <-- if you liked #cyberwarcon, you might like this panel discussion on the events that defined cybersecurity in 2022. What might stability look like in 2023?
I'll Q&A on the viasat incident if you dont )

Had a lovely conversation with a student today about my experience as a woman working at the intersection between national security and cybersecurity. It gave me the space to reflect on how much my experience has evolved over the years and for the better. I feel so incredibly fortunate to have found my people (so to speak) and to be so welcomed by them. Conferences like #LABScon and #CYBERWARCON and organizations like the Cyber Conflict Studies Association (CCSA) and the @alperovitch Institute at Johns Hopkins SAIS are wonderful examples of this. Deeply innovative and world class folks who see embracing and actively building a diverse community as central to their missions. Is it perfect? No. Do I still face challenges ranging from the blatant to subtle? Sadly, yes. Can and should we continue to do better? Absolutely, and please. But I am increasingly hopeful that we are heading in the right direction and that’s largely because leaders in this field have made it a priority. Let’s keep the momentum going! One day in the near future I want to find myself in a ridiculously long queue for the women’s restroom at every cybersecurity conference I attend.

Started feeling terrible yesterday, achy and slight fever. Winded from very mild exercise. Sore throat today. Still testing negative but I might have finally gotten Covid. I was very careful at the con…took my lunch outside to eat and kept my N95 on throughout. #CYBERWARCON
As always, the #CYBERWARCON content was fantastic, but seeing all my threat intel buddies in person after three years was especially amazing. Nothing beats an IRL meet-up.
A huge thanks to the @CYBERWARCON organizers for their hard work continuing to grow this special conference.
Another absolutely excellent @CYBERWARCON in the books! Excellent seeing everyone! Also big shout out to @Johnhultquist, Toni G, and @ridt et al for a great lineup! Already thinking about submission ideas for next year. #cti #cyberwarcon
Good write up of the opening #cyberwarcon talk that I missed: ""Strategically, the GRU needs to balance disruptive events and espionage. They want to continue imposing pain in every single domain, but they are also a military intelligence apparatus and have to keep collecting more real-time intelligence. So they've started 'living on the edge' of target networks to have this constant ready-made access and enable these fast-paced operations, both for disruption and spying." https://www.wired.com/story/russia-ukraine-cyberattacks-mandiant/
Incredible, until-recently-unthinkable dinner conversations with big tech friends after #cyberwarcon yesterday: how much longer can Twitter last? What are Musk's exit options? Could Twitter become some form of Parler? Should we delete DMs? How to archive before it's too late?
another wonderful positive note on #Cyberwarcon, from us out here in virtual seats, SlidesLive is a really nice platform. I liked how easy it was to embiggen either the video player or the slide deck as needed. And I took a peek at the page today -- I'm really looking forward to re-watching the talks and having control over the slide deck.
I did wish that Chrome would cast the video, or that there would be a 10-15 sec rewind/advance, but overall this is my new fave way to watch a talk. Cheers @CYBERWARCON :blobcheer2: :1000:

The #CYBERWARCON talks looked very interesting, I wish I had been able to register on time (and attended remotely). Does anyone know when they'll be available online?

At #CYBERWARCON, Mandiant analysts reveal new tactics used by Russia's GRU in its cyberattacks on Ukraine: Hacking "edge" devices to quicken their pace of operations, repeatedly hit the same victims, and even keep access to networks *after* they're wiped. https://www.wired.com/story/russia-ukraine-cyberattacks-mandiant/

What a great day today at #cyberwarcon. So many great talks! Thanks, @kikta, for introducing me to a few folks; meeting @juanandres_gs and @gavinwilde in person was great.
Thanks to all the presenters for the research you put into the presentations, and @Johnhultquist and the @CYBERWARCON team for all the hard work.
@Tmarsland I imagine so. It's usually a few days past the end of a vCON before the session recordings are available. I imagine we'll get an email with a link at some point. #CYBERWARCON
