Yet another beautiful #sunset in Melbourne tonight, from a suburban street in #glenwaverley #Australia.
As the sun was setting in the west (first pic), the remnants of the sunshine illuminated the #Dandenongs (our hills out to the outer eastern-suburbs).
Notice how the collective hilltop looks bronze-like in colour from the sunshine, reflecting off the 200 hectares (estimation) of foliage in the distance?
Whilst a small proportion of these hills are a little bare, most are covered with local fauna such as densely packed #Gumtreeβs.
The shining silvery squares are house roofs and you can see two layers of cloud cover separated by grey sky.
The bottom cloud has a top layer of orange from the reflection of the sun.
You can see some birds in the distance too.
So too a dome structure (from a local shopping centre), power lines and green trees in the foreground.
Itβs chilly now (just after 7pm) and daylight savings ends along the eastern sea board of Australia, tonight.
So thatβs an extra hours sleep (bonus!) but the evenings will become darker sooner as we head deeper into autumn and soon, into our winter.
The cycle of the seasons continues. π
Mother Nature is marvellous huh?!

There are few places more peaceful and relaxing than an outer suburban train station in the middle of the day. Nobody is in any hurry. A few puffs of clouds floating by on a gentle breeze. This is Upper Ferntree Gully looking towards the Dandenong hills.
I felt like bursting into a chorus of "Penny Lane".

It was the Ash Wednesday memorial on the 16th. I was contacted by a participant detailing what happened yesterday. Still processing the details. Here's what I knew in 2013.
Ash Wednesday, 30 years today:
Wednesday February 16th 1983
Spot fires have grown into uncontrolled fires in Cudgee Braxholme, Mt Macedon, Monivale, Warburton, the Otways and the Dandenongs.

This is the view along my rear boundary. My property had been rented for many years and was not cared for. Only the back along the boundary looked any good. It was all planted with natives, clear of weeds and well kept. It turned out that my neighbour took it upon himself to keep it that way as a firebreak and I suspect because he had run out of room on his own land to plant more natives.
The easement is owned by the water company who do absolutely no upkeep. Other parts are overgrown with Blackberry and weeds.
The third picture is of a silky oak (Grevillia Robusta) that he planted 4 or 5 years ago under a grey gum. It's reaching sideways for more sun. If you're looking for Australian native trees that are not Gum trees then Silky Oaks make a great choice.

Hello from my morning walk! Gosh I love where I live.
Weather and health were good enough today to let me visit with some #bird friends π
#bird #dandenongs #kingparrot #parrots #australia
I've learned not to feed #Cockatoos or #Parrots from my deck because they started to chew my weatherboards and deck furniture. Then they tried to eat my Daffodils and Tulips.
Now I have to keep my pot plants in old bird cages.

I hung a bird feeder on a tree down the back.

The #KingParrots discovered it first.
boys have a bright red body with green wings, the girls are green all over.
Then the #Cockatoos turned up and chased them away.
Cockatoos don't like to share.

@AndyPerfors The #Dandenongs are one of my favourite places in the world. I miss them.
I just changed instances. Hello #aus.social! Glad to be here!
Here's an #introduction.
I'm a #prof in computational #cogsci at #UniMelb. I use behavioural experiments and mathematical models to study how people #learn and #reason. I think a lot about how we make #inferences from sparse #data, how we #share information with each other, and how this affects our #cultural and #informational #systems.
I am a #parent to two amazing kids, love #teaching #rstats to psychology undergraduates, am an #American living in #Australia in the beautiful #Dandenongs, and am #trans (see post below). I try not to take myself too seriously, especially on social media.
