@Lane I realize this still uses the d20 as a success roll (which doesn't reduce your swingyness issue) but it has that roll count for an awful lot more, which to me makes it really helpful.
In my current #Dungeon23 #DnDBasic mods I'm beefing up fighters with abilities that activate on a 1-6 roll in combat. Fighters very seldom just miss; they didn't hit because they were doing something else, like boosting an ally's AC or improving next round party initiative. It reduces the feel of swing.
This might be useful. It's the math behind the comparisons and how dropping the 3d6 bpenalties to start at 5 (not 6 as I originally said) brings #DnDBasic into near parity with #ADnD. This is what I'll be using in my #Dungeon23 game to keep the 3d6 ranges but not run too much against player expectations.
Player psychology is weird. Looking over the shift from #DnDBasic to #ADnD in terms of attribute scores and the 4d6 drop low looks like your scores are GREAT compared to 3d6… until you look at the charts and see the bonuses don’t start until 15 rather than 13.
You have about the same chance (+/- 3%) of a bonus on any attribute and of having at least 1 bonus in both. The difference is in chance of a penalty. Remove the Basic charts symmetry, have penalties start at 6 not 8, and it’s equivalent
It’s work in progress since I’m using both January and February for my first level, and I’m a couple weeks ahead, but this is what Lost Galmagia looks like right now.
I had previously established the Ancestors Ward of Lost Galmagia in my rumors table, but wasn’t sure what to do with it until the idea of one accessible room containing a treasure map to a tomb the PC would have to exit the dungeon to excavate. I wanted the option for a smaller contained mini-dungeon with outsized rewards that was a pain to get to

Plotting out things for my Under the Giants Shadow milieu Lost Galmagia #Dungeon23 and realized I need to get some giants in the dungeon. So there are some on level 3, entombed there when the cities magical defenders had the Central Park invert, explaining why there’s but rock and stone where the park was, but a verdant woodland on the ceiling of level three, over the giants that are too large to eacape and too small to break out.
Continuing my mods to B/X and its amazing how much minor linguistic shifts early changes things.
"Intelligence" is now "Erudition" and while it has the same rules there's no more arguments about having to play your PC smart or dumb.
"Wisdom" is now Divine Favor. all it does is give bonuses to saves and clerics extra XP; I don't wanna deal with everything pushed into Wis over the years. DF is now much your god(s) love you. It's fantasy.
Now that my monthly group has agreed to the B/X Megadungeon format for this year and a) I need to get my #Dungeon23 into higher gear and b) the B/X race rules really do work to my favor in keeping a Tolkien feel to the milieu.
Expect many blog posts on this!
