@usluck It's precisely because I can't math that mathematics fascinates me.
#dyscalculia
Trying to figure out #dyscalculia after thirty is lol.
"The first thing to say is don't do more maths. More maths is unlikely to work because it's actually an anxiety problem. [...] We did one study where we got people to do a relaxation exercise and then followed them up. Their anxiety scores had dropped and they were able to solve more problems."

This brilliant video by Mica, @PonderfulYT, is as clear an explanation as you’ll find of the neurodiversity movement, neurodivergence and neurotypicality, and their relation to disability: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iicSLx19pc
And it’s not just good because Boba tries to steal the show! 😻

@futurebird through 12, but about half of them I never managed to memorize to this day because of #dyscalculia. 7s? 8s? Yeah, that's going to involve finger counting for me for the rest of my life.
We might have to replace a knackered kitchen appliance.

Had an embarrassing #dyscalculia moment the other day. My total came to $5.99 and I handed the cashier a $10. They asked if I had a dollar and I was like "Sorry, no, I have a quarter though?" and they gently pushed the quarter back into my hand. Didn't realize until later what was going on 🤦♂️
One more note on #dyscalculia: parents, if your child is having issues with numbers, math, and telling time push to have them assessed. Being labeled as lazy and told that I wasn't trying hard enough messed me up and I'm still dealing with it.
Until I was diagnosed with #dyscalculia I was labeled as lazy when it came to math. My scores in subjects like English and history were at the top of the charts but I felt so stupid because I couldn't understand numbers.
Dyscalculia also affected my ability to tell and keep track of time and even my ability to read music. As a kid I felt stupid and ashamed, and my teachers were not particularly kind about my difficulty with numbers.
I'm thankful that my physics teacher junior year in highschool took the time to try to reverse engineer my answers and forced the school to assess me. It's taken me years to accept my differences and to be honest with myself and others.
If you think you may have learning disabilities or may have OCD or ADHD get assessed if you can. Having a diagnosis helped not only with finding ways to work with my neurodivergence but also with my self esteem. I'm not stupid, my brain just works differently.
Rob McElhenney was diagnosed with 'neurodevelopmental disorders,' at 46. He's part of a growing trend of adults diagnosed with conditions like ADHD and autism later in life. https://www.insider.com/rob-mcelhenney-diagnosed-neurodevelopmental-disorders-adult-autism-adhd-neurodivergent-2023-7
>Rob McElhenney's experience is one of a growing trend of people who are diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders like autism and ADHD in adulthood.
>A 2014 study estimated that only 1 in 5 adults with ADHD has been diagnosed or receives treatment for ADHD. And studies show that autism is also under-diagnosed, especially in women. A 2022 study found that 80% of women are misdiagnosed with other conditions, like borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, bipolar disorder and anxiety.
I was diagnosed with #dyscalculia at 17, #OCD at 27, and #PTSD in my late 40s. Many women diagnosed with OCD may actually be on the spectrum. I have several friends who have been diagnosed with #ADHD in their 40s as well.
Thank you Anna Clark from Microsoft for introducing the Cognitive toolkit for the inclusive design toolkit. As someone with #dyscalculia and #ocd this hits home.
I knew about #dyslexia but I only found out 2-3 years ago that #dyscalculia exists.
I'm posting this just so you know too (if you haven't already) that this could be one of the reasons why you or someone you know struggles.
It never occurred to me that I might have a #LearningDisability. When I try to do any math(s) the numbers run around like a coop full of startled chickens.
I'm still not sure if I have dyscalculia, but at some point when I have the energy to do it, I'll have it tested.

I was never taught math and only managed to learn very basic addition and multiplication basically on my own.
The cult kept me out of school entirely, and I also have dyscalculia which can make even simple small numbers tricky for my brain.
Despite all that, I Really like numbers, patterns, math when I can figure it out, and I want to learn more! 🧠

Another #Neuroqueer design I have in my #RedBubble Shop. Link to my shop in bio/about section and in comments.
For me identifying as neuroqueer is a more succinct way to say I'm #AuDHD ( #ActuallyAutistic and #ADHD ) #Dyscalculia #CPTSD possibly #BPD and #NonBinary #Queer #pansexualgirls

Talking with my wife about this podcast episode about #dyscalculia made us realize how much my relatively mild dyscalculia impacts my life. I usually think of the "little" stuff—not being able to read analog clocks, needing to count on my fingers to do arithmetic, showing up to appointments ridiculously early because it's easier than figuring out the correct time to leave. But it's also been a huge barrier for really important stuff like learning to manage my finances!
In this episode, Laura shares her personal experience, and ways we can design more inclusively.
Laura, with help from Jane McFadyen and Rachel Malic, has carried out extensive research into dyscalculia, maths anxiety and low numeracy, and created the accessible numbers project to help design better for people who struggle with numbers.

The way #TrainTickets work in the UK really ticks me off. Because of the strikes, I’ve had to move the dates of my travel for work.
4 out of the 6 train tickets can be moved at an eye-watering admin fee of £20 and at a price that is £40 more than the original ticket. 2 of the train trips can’t be moved or refunded so you just lose them. It’s just nuts. How is this meant to encourage more people to use #PublicTransport when it is less hassle and expense to just drive? (I can’t actually drive, but the point is that the rest of my coworkers are now going to).
I’m pretty sure I have #dyscalculia so me trying to work out how the heck I’m meant to expense this is fun. I need a numbers and travel person to deal with all this stuff for me.
