If you're familiar with #EasternHemlock #forests then you might picture them as a closed #canopy with sparse vegetation in the #understory.
But when a fallen tree opens up that canopy, the #gap supports a profusion of #regeneration.
Very cool to find this understory #heterogeneity at #RBWinterStatePark in #Pennsylvania.

To support its full complement of native #biodiversity, a healthy #forest needs some unhealthy trees.
Mature, diseased, standing dead, dying, wind-blown, fallen, moss-covered, soil-returned – at every stage of life and death a tree provides for other species.
