Read why "Web Environment Integrity" is terrible, and why we must vocally oppose it now. Google's latest maneuver, if we don't act now to stop it, threatens our freedom to explore the Internet with browsers of our choice: https://u.fsf.org/40a #EndDRM #Enshittification #Google #WebStandards #DefectiveByDesign

This just feels like the stupidest feature for a search engine, ever.
In the age of #Enshittification you no longer need a unique selling point to successfully launch a new product. You only need to lack a unique pain point the competition arbitrarily created for themselves.
Just logged into github for the first time in a while, and my first thought was: "Where are my repositories?"
The home screen is now a "social screen" where other peoples' repositories are shown, presumably according to some algorithm.
I'm sure there are some advantages to this, but that's really not why I signed up to github all those years ago.
I've been shocked by this from the outset, and quite reluctant to share my phone by Bluetooth with the on-board computer in my car. But the alternative is highly outdated navigational maps that cost a fortune to upload, and no real-time info on the invariable jams & accidents to optimize the route home. #Mozilla is well-positioned to organize this petition, which I fully support.

Resist #enshittification!
#Google continues its campaign of Total #Enshittification. If for some reason you still use Chrome (why?!... no really, WHY?!), the latest release removes all pretext of privacy entirely: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/09/googles-widely-opposed-ad-platform-the-privacy-sandbox-launches-in-chrome/
There's just two steps to a good web experience again:
1. Install #Firefox
2. Install the Ublock Origin extension

@amunizp @ipstenu @pluralistic @miss_jwo Thanks.
#Enshittification is when an online platform becomes more monetized and less user-oriented the longer it lasts.
Infosec friends are unanimous: if you're using Chrome, you want to visit chrome://settings/adPrivacy and turn off Ad Topics, Site-Suggested Ads, and Ad Measurement.
IMPORTANT: you must do this for each of your Chrome profiles, since it's not a global setting.

Thats the other thing, almost every time I leave #youtube and come back, the youtube browser completely refreshes unecessarily.
There is no engineering reason why it needs to refresh every time you reenter. This doesnt happen on desktop.
#enshittification is honestly an understatement, in a climate where Im lectured for not even finishing the video.

It's the sad process of #enshittification, as explained (and coined) by @pluralistic
Microsoft #enshittification continues - this time OneNote + Firefox. Should read “Microsoft wants to make more ad dollars and track you even more so we are trying to force you to use Edge.” Real message is shown in image. If you want to do web clipping directly into OneNote this open source extension for Firefox (and other browsers) does a better job than “Firefox unsupported” MS Web Clipper. Though a little rough around the edges at times, it’s my “go-to” clipper now.👍👍 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/universal-web-clipper/
Come spegnerla:

For several reasons (don’t @ me) I still have accounts on those other sites (winding down) and it’s continuously baffling to me that people I consider politically and academically smart continue to complain about #enshittification (of the #birxsite, of Google, of Chrome) but can’t be arsed to use the alternatives that are already in place. What is this phenomenon? Even those fleeing the #birdsite go to #bluesky - and talk about how it will very probably go down the same route. But #Mastodon is „unusable“, say the super communist critics of tech on the central website of the very industry they complain about

@strangeparts
I've just pulled the trigger on this for 2 reasons
1. Might have to end the Curiosity Stream bundle next year if they raise subscription rates too high
2. The #enshittification process that @pluralistic describes seems to be gathering pace at #YouTube and smaller creators are being tossed on the trash heap
@lmorchard Facebook is an unfathomable place to me. Feel like a stranger in a very strange land. LinkedIn is starting to feel that way with the various and often jarring "suggestions" that interrupt the feed, and people using it for unintended purposes.
In other words #enshittification of all these things.
@StillIRise1963 Or Florida. Or any other Red state whose governor has made it a priority to dumb down the system (Nebraska). #enshittification
