Eric Ambler was an early master of the spy story and influenced many other writers including John le Carré. His sixth book, Journey Into Fear, takes place in the very early days of the Second World War and the central character is an English engineer who specializes in designing naval weapons. On a business trip to Turkey he's thrown into this alien secret world.

@Pulpcurry I love buying old paperbacks from thrift stores/charity shops. I read #theIpcressFile earlier this year. I thought it was reasonably entertaining but a bit directionless for me :) Never read any #EricAmbler but will do if he’s recommended

Eric Ambler’s 1939 novel The Mask of Dimitrios (the US title is A Coffin for Dimitrios) is a true classic of the crime/espionage genre by one of the grand masters of the genre.

Brilliantly plotted and executed with tremendous elan.
