@ixi When we give into or allow xenophobia and hate we get Manzanar. I visited in 2021 and am still haunted by the whole experience. I simply could not shake the feeling of Evil that permeated that bleak place. OTD in 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 allowing for the mass confinement of 120,000 Americans of 1/16th Japanese ancestry.

In 1943, Ansel Adams visited the Manzanar camp and took photos of the Americans imprisoned there.

It's our duty to make sure something like this never happens again.

Roosevelt, ten weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, issued a directive ordering all Japanese Americans (Nisei) evacuated from the West Coast of the U.S., and forcing them to live in concentration camps. Executive Order 9066 authorized the Secretary of War and military commanders “to prescribe military areas . . . from which any or all persons may be excluded.”

And, as taught me by Dr. Ginger Wilson at Duke University when I was 13 years old: just as it’s necessary to remember the infamy of Dec. 7, 1941, so too must we remember the infamy of Executive Order 9066, which two months later authorized the forced relocation of Japanese-Americans — #Issei and #Nisei alike — from the West Coast of the United States to internment camps further inland.
