The AMOC: tipping this century, or not?

realclimate.org/index.php/arch

Speaking of shorebirds in the North Atlantic, a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation would result in the extinction of many species and collapse of coastal ecosystems (and their functions and services).

"An AMOC collapse would be a massive, planetary-scale disaster. Some of the consequences: Cooling and increased storminess in northwestern Europe, major additional sea level rise especially along the American Atlantic coast, a southward shift of tropical rainfall belts (causing drought in some regions and flooding in others), reduced ocean carbon dioxide uptake, greatly reduced oxygen supply to the deep ocean, likely ecosystem collapse in the northern Atlantic, and others."

Stay tuned, September 15-17: fightfossilfuels.net/

For those in NYC or who can make it, a week of actions culminating in a mass march on 9/17 and a mass direct action on 9/18: acttoendfossilfuels.org/

YASunidos: Ecuadorian Authorities Thwart National Referendum on Yasuní-ITT through Fraud and Militarization

Illustrates the point that under capitalism, it is impossible to attain lasting reforms, much last structural transformation. Anything achieved is accomplished under the impetus of social movement, but with the ruling wealthy and their politicians pushing back, such reforms only last as long as the balance of social forces favors working people and our movements. In the U.S., the two dominant political parties play their electoral games, promising the sun, electioneering, horsetrading, triangulating, while remaining within the parameters of capital's need for profits and intrinsic growth dynamic. There is no "lesser evil," just nuances of greater evil. The battles never end. It's time for our "Kobayashi Maru."

Stop logging in the Great Koala National Park
"17% of state forests planned for the Great National Park could be logged in the next 12 months. Of the 175,000ha of that constitutes the GKNP proposal (green) Forestry Corporation NSW plans to log over 17% in the next 12 months (red), including some of the most important koala habitat in NSW (white). Your taxes are being spent to pay for it."

What would this be called if it were any other species? Pests? Swarm? Infestation? Epidemic? Plague? Language tells us a lot about our loyalties and priorities.

If only there were some sort of tiny self-propelled thingies that would do it for free and automatically refresh and regenerate the population of tiny self-propelled thingies at no additional cost.

I can't help feeling that although the development of technologies that stop the decline of insect life might not be as sexy as robotics it might be more worthwhile.

of sharks and rays to have devastating effect on other species. was the main cause of the declines over the past half a century, with larger sharks and rays being particularly hard hit. These and have evolved over 450m years and survived six mass extinctions but they can’t deal with this pressure. Sharks are “functionally extinct” on 20% of the world’s coral reefs.

We read articles by David Fleay in our latest episode. He took video footage of the last thylacine in captivity. It bit him on the bum. His daughter Rosemary says Fleay regarded this as the "highlight of his natural history career".

Here Rosemary also talks about their family expedition to search for thylacines in 1945.

@suebeesley It's a shame. Personally, I still wouldn't fly. Would check coach travel, maybe break the train journey, take the financial hit, etc. But I know I'm a fanatic, and because of this travel much less than I'd like. The system needs to change. Keep protesting! Write to your MP!

Not content with dragging the chain on action, now has begun a new era of imprisoning climate activists who hold up traffic or try to protect native forests from logging. I mean it’s not like we’re in an or anything right? The Sydney Morning Herald reports: “Climate activist Deanna Marie ‘Violet’ Coco will spend at least eight months in prison for blocking one lane of the Harbour Bridge by standing on the roof of a truck holding a lit emergency flare in April.

Coco, a 31-year-old Fireproof Australia and Extinction Rebellion supporter, plead guilty to seven charges, including disrupting vehicles, interfering with the safe operation of a bridge, possessing a bright light distress signal in a public place, failing to comply with police direction, and resisting or hindering a police officer.”

This is a quandary as I do like rockets and the prospect of a space industry. This said I am wary, resulting from previous mitigation plans conjured to allow fossil fuel project destruction of habitats (Adani’s Black throated Finch anyone?).
Is there such a thing as a guaranteed mitigation plan? I don’t think so.
