Going through field photos and was reminded of the time this past winter that my rock hammer got left at the office. So I went to a nearby Lowe's and bought a claw hammer 🙄. At least it was an Estwing.

Finally back in the field today, scouting out a new mapping area and looking for some graphite schist.

If I had big enough pockets I would take home every float with slickensides. They spark joy. #Geology #FieldPhotos
After some brief rain it turned into a pretty good day for field work. #Geology #FieldPhotos #FieldWork

This stunning breccia was the last thing I expected to find while mapping in the piedmont recently. Lots of discussion on what it could be. The two most obvious possibilities are an erosional remnant of the Cretaceous onlap or a much younger terrace deposit from a nearby major river.
Problem is, the onlap and terraces in the area don't look anything like this. Those are usually made up of crossbedded sand and rounded pebbles with lots of clay. #Geology #fieldphotos #Alabama

A cliff of Parkwood Formation sandstone at top of the Lookout Mountain escarpment. There are two distinct packages of rock here. The upper part is made up of crossbedded sandstone while the lower part are thinner rippled sandstone.

Exhausting and productive day geologizing. I wonder how many phyla I could observe in one trip? I have photos of at least 8, here are 4. #fieldphotos #fieldwork
Found a delightful outcrop of fault breccia in the Fort Payne chert. Pictures do not do it justice. #geology #GeologyInTheWild #fieldphotos #fieldwork

Great Blue Heron inspecting me while I inspected some Chickamauga Limestone. Shortly after this the storms arrived and I had to hightail it out of the woods and shelter in my vehicle. #fieldphotos #fieldwork
