The or sometimes known as , is native to the Mediterranean, the Atlantic islands and the Arabian peninsula.

Growing to 60Β cm (24Β in) tall, it has gray-green, lance-shaped leaves and a lightly woolly texture.

The long-lasting, narrow spikes of purple flowers, topped with pale violet leaves, first appear in late spring. The whole plant is aromatic with the typical lavender fragrance. This one on the farm is at the end of its flowering cycle, however still has its dominant lavender scent.
