Rina Ayuyang’s prior two books were #graphicMemoir & I’m so impressed by what she’s accomplished with fiction. It’s a noir tale set in #sanfrancisco #ManilaTown in 1929. Tightly told, while still very atmospheric. Revealing history & community through characters who bring us into moment, time, & spaces.

In the meantime, I gotta recommend Tessa Brunton’s #GraphicMemoir Notes From A Sickbed. She has #ME. Tessa’s comics are beautiful & surreal—the book chronicles how she tried to figure out how to live with her #ChronicIllness. It takes place before her correct diagnosis. Her work is so full of notes, humor, textures & imagination—a lot to spend time with on every page. #comics

Kate Beaton’s #GraphicMemoir sketches homesickness, sexism, danger – & occasional beauty – in the hellscape that is the #OilSands.
One lovely vignette occurs when she explains that Maritimers have long had to leave home to work elsewhere (a loss that defines their music & literature), & we see that she is reading “No Great Mischief” by the wonderful Alistair MacLeod.

Submitting the pitch felt surprisingly cathartic. It’s the only project that I was interested in publishing and finishing even the crappy pitch felt like freedom.
But it took up so much headspace for so long that I’ve felt creatively adrift since (with maybe a bit of mourning for kissing the hope of publication goodbye).
