This apple is colloquially called a "sheeps-nose." It's an English cultivar; this one hails from southern Vermont. This is not typically recommended as an apple to enjoy out-of-hand, and after one enthusiastic bite and a less enthusiastic follow-on I see why. Think red delicious past its prime (in fairness this is not a late in season apple and it definitely a late in season date so that may be part of it). I am told, however, that these make a perfect applesauce.
