I had forgotten how much time cross-browser compatibility research takes. I now spent about 6 hours on #hyphenation in three browsers and four languages.
And Firefox doesn't hyphenate ALL-CAPS words in any language, but this is clearly a bug.
Yesterday I looked at three Dutch hyphenation rules lists, and I even called a Dutch language help line I didn't know existed, but it is categorically allowed in Dutch, and Firefox is doing it wrong. I suspect the same is true for German and French.
Then the only outstanding #css #hyphenation question is why ALL-CAPS words aren't hyphenated in any browser.
Is there a rule for this in English hyphenation? If so, what do you do with acronyms such as UNICEF?
Interesting. My Edge/Windows does not have a Dutch dictionary, while Chrome on the same system does. So dictionaries are now proven to be applied on a per-browser basis, and not a per-system one.
Also, why does a Dutch-language Edge lack the Dutch dictionary?
and I will never ever accept "bloodred." It is an abomination. #copyediting #feh #hyphenation

@frischefarbe I hope it was okay to include your #hyphenation slides as screenshots. I ran out of time and your presentation at TUG was splendid.
One week ago, I gave my talk about #DigitalTypesetting. Main points were:
(1) Digital typesetting is difficult; has many requirements; some originate from manual typesetting
(2) There are plenty of standards to follow. #Unicode is [for me personally the most important] one.
(3) #HarfBuzz is an important component. I presented the #hyphenation algorithm with slides by @frischefarbe

#AP drops the mic on #hyphenation: "My colleague who answered your question last week didn't think the hyphen was necessary. He believes that it just adds clutter and distraction in your example. Editors from previous years preferred to use the hyphen in this term. Both are right. Neither is wrong. That's often the case in matters of hyphenation."

How can I run python script to add hyphens to txt file? ๐ค
For windows I was using 'python softhyphen.py filename.txt' (where softhyphen.py is the file containing hyphenation rules)..
Tried the same but the terminal does not recognize 'python' command, only 'python3', and gives me SyntaxError: invalid syntax ๐
On 7th of February 2023, I will give a talk [0] on digital typesetting here in #Graz. I don't think there is going to be a recording, but I will share the slides at this URL [1].
I will focus on a requirement analysis, discuss existing solutions and will present my own software project #typho. If you are interested, join me!

What do you think about #css #hypens? It is useful, but
#hyphenation dictionary for various languages are not so well supported.
