This article showcases the importance of three radical ideas:
1. The necessity of free and open source software being the norm
2. The necessity of abolishing intellectual property
3. "Piracy" (unlawful copying) should always be encouraged and supported

i don't have that much sympathy for xecutor because in some parts of their business they functioned as hypocrites, taking open-source code from others and putting it in their own closed proprietary software. like morally i have no issue with selling jailbroken hardware or selling devices to get around that stuff, none of that should be illegal. but it's fucked not to apply that standard of openness to yourself and your projects.
it's still unreasonable to take 20-30% of someone's monthly income to pay off a $14 million debt to a billion-dollar corporation for the so-called crime of opening up locked-down hardware. i don't care how many supposed lost sales resulted from folks breaking your monopoly right.

stephanie sterling released a jimquisition episode about EA holding the license to the Alice video game franchise out of use, and how the original developer can't even make a new Alice game as a result. it's a very good video and it's another tally mark in the wall of ways intellectual property and the corporate media publishers it exists for suppresses art.
having a monopoly right to an idea is bad enough, but refusing to do anything productive with it when developers want to do so, or trapping it in a cycle where it changes hands between the same billion-dollar publishers is deeply stupid.

perspectives like this, where you have individuals (especially digital artists) calling for the RIAA's intervention against AI art is partly our fault because we didn't push back hard enough against anti-copying trends in this space, against the idea that reposting with linkbacks wasn't good enough, against the idea that a creative commons and a free and open culture threatened artists' lives rather than the deaths by a thousand cuts that the current economy subjects all of us too, including from copyright.

trademarks are an underscrutinized element of the IP monopoly but its also wielded by corporations in ways just as controlling

i found a nightmare from reading an acquaintance's birdsite feed a day ago. the authors didn't consent to this and it isn't even protected by copyright law here but the publisher had the gall to include it anyway.
this is normally a notice you'd find in ebooks and they're stupid in that context, but if publishers and certain authors could lock down physical books like tesla does to its used cars to squeeze more rents out of consumers they would do so.
mike masnick talks about this in a broader writeup about the internet archive lawsuit: https://www.techdirt.com/2023/03/22/book-publishers-wont-stop-until-libraries-are-dead/
So as a result of Trump's ""free trade"" deal, #copyright censorship shall extend in Canada another 20 years. The public domain small remain robbed for the duration of that time.
