Hopefully I’m special: updating my #iPhone 14 with today's emergency security update hosed it such that I got a ‘plug me in' restore screen that would not go away and did not elicit any response from my 2018 MBP running Big Sur when plugged in.
Plugging into the iMac (2015) also running Big Sur did start a fresh download for update there, so maybe I didn't lose the whole device.

BEWARE macOS USERS!!!!!
Oy.
Here’s a thought: if you do not understand what #Apple’s “Gatekeeper” and “Notarization” do to protect you from this sort of thing, YOU SHOULD NOT DISCARD THEIR PROTECTIONS!!!!
If you DO decide to work around them to try out some new software that somehow you’re the first person to ever see, protect yourself when doing so. If you don’t understand the tactics necessary to protect yourself, DO NOT DO THAT!

How sad. Whenever the iOS Weather app notifies about a severe TS warning (e.g. just now for #Macomb County…) its radar source collapses under the load of people from one area all asking for the same maps all at once. Wunderground app (now part of IBM/Weather Channel) seems to have no such problem.
I’m so old that the idea of #IBM providing better UX than #Apple on Apple’s own devices offends me…

And yes, #backup is absolutely an #InfoSec concern. Not just on #macOS but everywhere. It is especially problematic for a base system backup tool like #TimeMachine to fail chronically and quietly with such a simple sort of failure. It’s a utilizable bug.

#PSA: If you have #TimeMachine issues with network backups chronically failing due to lost #AFP mounts, and use either #Cisco #AnyConnect or #ObjectiveSee #LuLu, try disabling them.
From what I can see on #BigSur, it seems like they each have independent stability impacts on AFP mounts which result in TM failing, from which it recovers poorly. With both enabled, the failures are enough to prevent any lengthy backups, e.g. those following a system update.

It’s deeply insidious because it mostly just looks like backups are always busy. Copying the same files it has copied a dozen times before, never quite getting to ALL of them. Eventually, #Cisco’s garbageware hits its bug and forces a restart. and #TimeMachine has no idea how to ever get done.

Let me just say once more:
#Cisco’s VPN software sucks.
This time? Just a macOS "Socket Filter" installed by #AnyConnect that causes random #AFP mount failures & corrupted SSH sessions every few hours randomly.
You know AFP? Not AFPS, AFP. Apple File Protocol, that thing you need to use for #TimeMachine backups. #AppleShare over TCP for us oldies. TimeMachine, that great-in-theory backup tool that makes no use of its half-done backups. Like you get with a mount failure.

Why does #macOS #TimeMachine do *FOUR* fsck’s when it mounts the backup image???
This is from /var/log/fsck_hfs.log.
